Kyoto Buddhist altars and altar accessories are the culmination of various techniques such as woodworking, lacquering, gold leaf pressing, coloring, and metal ornamentation.
At Iwata Houraiya, we take advantage of these traditional techniques to produce and propose luxury furniture, interior design materials, and accessories for the interior design market. We use mainly natural paints such as lacquer and mineral pigments that have been in use since ancient times, and which produce high-quality, reliable, and sustainable products through repeated repairs and restorations. In recent years, we have actively collaborated with designers from outside Japan, participating in exhibitions in France (Maison & Objet) and Dubai (Downtown Design), and holding workshops with Tashkeel. We have also sold our products to Belgium, the United States, and China. In the future, we hope to offer more products and techniques, and to collaborate in more production.

The production of Kyoto altars and altar accessories is the culmination of a variety of techniques. The skills of Kyoto craftsmen are among the best in Japan, and a wide range of depictions and productions are possible, from making small accessories to creating temple spaces. The process is mainly done by hand, and the elaborate details and beauty of the work are different from mass production, resulting in products that are one-of-a-kind. In recent years, we have partnered with companies that have carried on traditional industries such as tatami mats, clay walls, Nishijin brocade, bamboo, and Kitayama cedar to create sukiya-style architecture, wabi sabi, and other spaces that take advantage of the natural beauty of nature.
We hope you will use these wonderful traditional Japanese techniques in your products and spaces!
