We have been manufacturing ceramics in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, for about 340 years. Our products have been exported from the end of the Edo period (late 1850s) to the prewar period (1930s), and many international museums, including the British Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, have our products in their collections. We began expanding our global sales channels again around 10 years ago and now hold events once a year, mainly in Europe and the United States. Although we have a small number of employees, we offer a comprehensive range of traditional Kyoyaki pottery techniques and can fulfill any order from Japan or overseas. We have a tea ceremony room attached to our studio, where we occasionally hold special tea ceremonies for the wealthy using Makuzu’s works, and many people, including royalty, visit us. As potters, we have crafted matcha utensils, sencha utensils, and large art works for the international market to meet the demands of the times. We have and will continue to create new works in accordance with the times, using many Kyoyaki pottery techniques, such as overglaze and underglaze painting, that have been handed down from generation to generation.
There are also techniques that only Makuzu can offer, such as glazes made from straw ashes and fine openwork techniques that have been passed down for generations.
We also accept a wide range of custom orders using these techniques.
