Tatami is a traditional flooring material that has been used since the Nara period. It consists of tatami-omote (facing) and tatami-doko (core material), which are sewn together with tatami-beri (hem). For the facing, natural rush is normally used.
The major rush production region in Japan is Yatsushiro in Kumamoto, which boasts a share of 80-90% of the domestically produced tatami facing market, and facings from the region are even used to restore historical cultural properties.
The demand for tatami has been falling due to a shift to Western-style rooms, which has led to a reduced number of rush farmers. In recent years, rushes have been gaining attention again as natural materials are being re-evaluated and health awareness is increasing. As a result, domestic production areas are aiming to further improve quality and expand demand.
